Inside the Literary Mind of Kathy Love
March 16, 2017
My romance style is sexy, humorous, but heartwarming. I like quirky characters, but I also like lots of emotion.
USA TODAY bestseller, Kathy Love has been labeled “a character-driven author, who prefers complex subjects that add an emotional, humorous edge” by Romantic Times.
Originally from Maine, she now resides in Maryland with her family, a rescue mutt and five black cats.
As one reviewer said of Kathy’s books: I LOVED the romance, suspense, and drama!
Question: Tell me about your newest book and what was the inspiration behind your writing it?
Kathy: I’m very excited to be a part of a fantastic horror/thriller anthology titled RUN. Although I primarily write romance, both paranormal and contemporary, I’ve always loved horror. Growing up in Maine, Stephen King is practically required reading, so I’ve always been a fan of his work. But I’m a fan of many horror/thriller authors. F. Paul Wilson, Alexandra Sokoloff, Dean Koontz, James Herbert, the list goes on. I’m also a horror movie junkie.
The inspiration for my story was the idea that monsters are in our own heads. My story A LOVE STORY plays with that idea. I’m hoping that it’s truly scary and leaves the reader wondering who the monster really was.
Question: Why and when did you decide to become a writer?
Kathy: I started writing fanfiction in junior high. Of course, back when I started writing these type of stories, we didn’t have the name fanfiction. (Showing my age here.) But that was what I was doing. I primarily wrote for my friends and my own entertainment. I always knew I wanted to be a writer, but I put it on the back burner until I was about thirty.
Then I decided to give it a shot. I wrote a vampire romance in 2000. Initially, that book didn’t sell, but it opened the door for me to write for Kensington and the amazing Kate Duffy. She bought a series of contemporary romance from me, and then we actually revisited the vampire romance, which she did ultimately buy. That book became the first in my Young Brothers series. It’s titled FANGS FOR THE MEMORIES and led me to write fifteen more paranormal romances for Kensington.
Question: What book has been the greatest influence on you and your writing and why?
Kathy: The book that made me decide to try to get published was Susan Elizabeth Phillips’ contemporary romance KISS AN ANGEL. The hero is the whip man in a circus. That premise is so out there, yet the characters and storyline are so engaging. I read it and thought, “maybe there is a place out there for my stories too.” So I gave it a shot. I’m glad I did.
Question: Where do you find ideas for your books?
Kathy: I find ideas everywhere. From music. From news stories. From coworkers. (Yes, some of my characters are based on real people.) My mind is always working on new stories.
Question: Where do you find ideas for your characters?
Kathy: The same places. When writing romance, I usually come up with the characters first. But in horror, I come up with the plot first.
Question: How would you describe your writing style?
Kathy: My romance style is sexy, humorous, but heartwarming. I like quirky characters, but I also like lots of emotion. In my horror, I think my characters are still quirky and I hope there is some humor in there too. But I also want the readers on the edge of their seats. I want them to care about these characters and dread the awful things that are about to happen to them.
Question: What do you consider the most difficult part of writing a book?
Kathy: For me, it’s actually getting my butt in the chair and getting the words down. I’m a bit of a procrastinator. But once I actually start writing, the words flow pretty easily.
Question: What are your current projects?
Kathy: I’m very excited about that. I’m currently working on the third book in my Matchmaker series. These are a series of contemporary romances set in a small coastal town in Maine. I describe them as Chocolat meets Northern Exposure. An odd woman moves into town and opens an eclectic vintage shop. But soon the locals start to wonder if there is something strange about the items she’s selling, because some of them are finding romance with the last people they would expect. I’m having a lot of fun with these books. The first one was PERFECT MATCH. The next two will be MISS MATCHED and REMATCH. I hope you will check them out!
