Hannibal, Missouri

The Legends of Mark Twain still cling to the shoreline of the Mississippi River at his hometown of Hannibal, Missouri. As a writer, Twain mined his memory, using many of Hannibal’s locations for his tales about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. On brick-paved Hill Street, which leads to the river, stand the boyhood home of Twain, known then as Samuel Clemens, and the Becky Thatcher House, which he remembered as the home of his childhood sweetheart Laura Hawkins. Across the street is the tiny Clemens Law Office, where Twin’s father once presided as the town’s justice of the peace. The room, with its worn wooden floors and weathered furniture, was used in detailing Muff Potter’s trial in the classic book, Tom Sawyer.
